Формування навичок мовленнєвої культури в процесі вивчення англійської мови є одним з актуальних завдань методики навчання англійської мови. Тому на різних етапах уроку вчитель повинен використовувати вірші для формування й удосконалення навичок усно мовленнєвої комунікації учнів.

Римування та вірші можуть використовуватися з різною метою: для фонетичної зарядки та опрацювання окремих звуків, для опанування англійської інтонації, під час проведення ігор, при вивченні граматичного матеріалу. За допомогою віршів, римувань можна здійснювати навчання аудіюванню. Вони є багатим фоном і соціального та історичного змісту у вивченні мови, а також забезпечують зміст, процес і предмет вивчення мови.

Слід зазначити, що особливо ефективним використання таких форм з учнями молодших та середніх класів, бо учням саме цього віку характерна пластичність мозку, підвищена сенситивність, яскраво виражені імітативні здібності, які підкреслюють здатність до наслідування.

Такі форми роботи розширюють словниковий запас учнів, полегшують вивчення граматичних явищ, сприяють розвиткові фонематичного слуху; виховують інтерес до вивчення англійської мови, розширюють знання учнів про культуру, життя мешканців Великобританії, підвищують емоційний фон уроку. Також вивчення віршів, римувань та пісень сприяє реалізації комунікативного підходу, який є провідним у навчанні англійської мови на сучасному етапі.
