THE WEB – TEACHING ZACK TO THINK

As more and more students access the Internet for research, it's important that they learn how to validate online information. The Internet is a place where you can find "proof" of almost any belief system that you can imagine. And, for too many students, "If it's on the Internet, it must be true."

The following story is also true.

Fourteen-year-old Zack was asked to research a unique topic for his history class. Zack knew a bit about using reliable sources on the Internet, so when he found some information on a Web page on the US Northwestern University site he felt sure that he had found a reliable source of information for his project. The topic was unique too–Holocaust Revisionism–Zack had never heard of that before, so he decided to write his history paper on "How the Holocaust Never Happened."

Zack found his "information" from a Web page at http://pubweb. northwestern.edu/~abutz/ (no longer at this URL), titled "Home Web Page of Arthur R. Butz." On his low-key home page, Butz explained that he wrote "A short introduction to the study of Holocaust revisionism" and that his material was intended for "advanced students of Holocaust revisionism."

At the top of the page Butz identified himself as "Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northwestern University". His article began with the following: "I see principal reasons for the widespread but erroneous belief in the legend of millions of Jews killed by the Germans during World War II:

During both world wars Germany was forced to fight typhus… That was one of the main reasons for a high death rate in the camps, and the crematoria...

Look at the above situation from the perspective of a 14-year-old, untrained to think critically about information. He's researching the Holocaust, and suddenly finds this Web page. His teacher told him to find a unique topic, and this certainly fit the bill. The page is simple and clear. It's written in a calm, logical tone. The page is clearly intended for experts in its field. Best of all is the source: Northwestern University! And a professor to boot! Perfect.

THINKING ABOUT WHAT WE’VE FOUND

The fact is that students increasingly depend on the Internet for information, so it's important that they develop ways to evaluate their findings. Zack could have used some, or all, of the following techniques to decide whether the site was a reliable source for information.

Purpose

Try to determine a Web site's purpose. What is it trying to do? Why was it created? Most Web sites are designed to sell services and products, present information, put ideas forward, or entertain. Many sites do several of these at once.

A Web site's purpose will not always be clear. Look at Butz's site. His purpose is surely advocacy, although he comes across as an objective information provider, especially in the closing sentence of his article: "Surely any thoughtful person must be skeptical." Would a 14-year-old know how to distinguish between objective information and propaganda?

Understand the purpose(s) of a Web site, and that those purpose(s) may not be entirely obvious.

Author

The next step in validation involves the site's author. We all know that it's easy to fool people. Many people will believe someone if he or she sounds authoritative. Butz is a professor, sure, but he's an Engineering professor. How does that qualify him to speak as an expert on the Holocaust? It doesn't. But people see "Professor" and take what he says seriously.

Zack didn't know anything about Butz, but could have researched his background. If Zack ran a search for "Arthur Butz," on the search engine Google, he would find Butz's name on a page titled "Holocaust Deniers" at the Web site for the anti-hate organization HateWatch (http://www.spl-center.org/intel/hatewatch/). Similarly, Zack would find Butz's article at a second hate directory site listed under "A Guide to Hate Groups on the Internet: Hate Books, Newsletters and Articles". Zack would find Butz mentioned negatively in a March 1998 USA Today article titled, "College anti-Semitism on the rise, according to new report." Zack would also find Butz's book described as popular among "anti-Semites" in a review of Deborah Lipstadt's book Denying the Holocaust.

If Zack had run this multi-search on Butz, he would have seen how other people categorize Butz' work. Establish the credibility of the author.

Meta-Web Information

Meta-Web information validates Web pages solely within the context of other Web pages.

Let's start with the URL, or address, of a Web page. You need to know when they're accessing a personal home page. Most Internet Service Providers give their subscribers a few megabytes of free space on a Web server to use as they want.

Here are two sample URLs: <http://www.cdsinet.net/users/bartlett> and <http://www.icon-stl.net/~stefan/>. An experienced Web user knows that both URLs point to personal home pages.

In the first example, the word "users" is the user name of someone who accesses the Internet through cdsinet.net. In the second example, focus on the ~. A tilde (~) indicates a Web site that has been created by someone given space on a Web server. "stefan" is the user name of someone who accesses the Internet through icon-stl.net.

Knowing the above, if Zack had looked at Butz's URL – <http://pubweb.acns.nwu.edu/~abutz/index.html> – he'd have seen the ~, an indicator that this is a personal Web site.

Just as Zack can know something about individuals by their clothing, he can learn about a Web site by looking at its URL. Clothing tells us a lot, but the company a person keeps tells us more. Learning how a Web page interacts within the network of all other Web sites is valuable information.

Meta-information sources

It is always a good idea to look beyond the Internet for sources of authentic information.

TEXT 15

Task 1. Read the text and summarize the information from it in a paragraph.

COMPUTER-AIDED INSTRUCTION

Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) is diverse and rapidly expanding spectrum of computer technologies that assist the teaching and learning process. CAI is also known as computer-assisted instruction. Examples of CAI applications include guided drill and practice exercises, computer visualization of complex objects, and computer-facilitated communication between students and teachers. The number of computers in American schools has risen from one for every 125 students in 1981 to one for every nine students in 1996. While the United States leads the world in the number of computers per school student, Western European and Japanese schools are also highly computerized.

Information that helps teach or encourages interaction can be presented on computers in the form of text or in multimedia formats, which include photographs, videos, animation, speech, and music. The guided drill is a computer program that poses questions to students, returns feedback, and selects additional questions based on the students' responses. Recent guided drill systems incorporate the principles of education in addition to subject matter knowledge into the computer program.

Computers also can help students visualize objects that are difficult or impossible to view. For example, computers can be used to display human anatomy, molecular structures, or complex geometrical objects. Exploration and manipulation of simulated environments can be accomplished with CAI – ranging from virtual laboratory experiments that may be too difficult, expensive, or dangerous to perform in a school environment to complex virtual worlds like those used in airplane flight simulators.

CAI can dramatically increase a student's access to information. The program can adapt to the abilities and preferences of the individual student and increase the amount of personalized instruction a student receives. Many students benefit from the immediate responsiveness of computer interactions and appreciate the self-paced and private learning environment. Moreover, computer-learning experiences often engage the interest of students, motivating them to learn and increasing independence and personal responsibility for education.

CAI is successful in raising examination scores, improving student attitudes, and lowering the amount of time required to master certain material. While study results vary greatly, there is substantial evidence that CAI can enhance learning at all educational levels.

In some applications, especially those involving abstract reasoning and problem-solving processes, CAI has not been very effective. Critics claim that poorly designed CAI systems can dehumanize or regiment the educational experience and thereby diminish student interest and motivation. Other disadvantages of CAI stem from the difficulty and expense of implementing and maintaining the necessary computer systems. Some student failures can be traced to inadequate teacher training in CAI systems. Student training in the computer technology may be required as well, and this process can distract from the core educational process. Although much effort has been directed at developing CAI systems that are easy to use and incorporate expert knowledge of teaching and learning, such systems are still far from achieving their full potential.

Task 2

Make use of the information from the article and translate from Ukrainian into English:

4. 10) Teaching being no prestigious any longer, departments of education at American universities are few.

TEACHER TRAINING

Ancient and medieval societies lacked institutions offering instruction in the principles and practices of teaching. Persons intending to become teachers were required only to demonstrate knowledge of those subjects they desired to teach. During the Renaissance, some teachers such as Vittorino da Feltre in Italy, Johannes Sturm in Germany, and John Colet in England gained wide recognition for their learning and ability to teach, but the training of teachers was given little attention. It was not until the rise of democratic principles during the 17th and 18th centuries, with their assertion that the political, social, and economic development of nations could best be achieved through the education of the individual citizen, that measures were taken to establish institutions to provide teacher training.

The earliest-known educational institution to offer a systematic program of teacher training was the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, which was established in 1685 at Reims, France, by the French priest Saint John Baptist de la Salle. In the 18th century other such institutions were begun in France and Germany. A government-sponsored school established in France in 1794 was the first to follow the principles of the philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau.

Rousseau believed that educators should concern themselves primarily with the mental and physical development of their pupils and only secondarily with subject matter. This principle was later adopted by teacher-training schools throughout the world and became a basic doctrine of all educational theory. The most important of the many educators who applied and developed the pedagogical theories of Rousseau was the late 18th-century Swiss educational reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi.

An important advance in teacher-training theories and methods was made in Prussia early in the 19th century with the application of the views of the educator Johann Friedrich Herbart. He stressed the study of the psychological processes of learning as a means of devising educational programs based on the aptitudes, abilities, and interests of students. The success of Herbart's methods led to their adoption in the teacher-training systems of numerous countries.

In the 20th century many new trends and problems in relation to the growth of the profession have arisen. Largely because of the teaching of the American philosopher and educator John Dewey, the study of methods of teaching has been recognized as a science. Standards for the certification of teachers were raised in all states. Elementary-school teachers were required to complete a college-degree course before being given a permanent teaching certificate, while study beyond a bachelor's degree has become necessary to teach on a permanent basis in high school. In addition to a thorough command of at least one academic subject, a qualified teacher is expected to have a broad background of general education, as well as professional preparation that includes the psychology of children or adolescents, the principles and techniques of teaching, and the historical foundations of education.

There are several hundred teachers colleges in the U.S., as well as private schools that train teachers of kindergarten and preschool education. With teaching now accorded full professional status, most colleges and universities have established departments of education. The work of these institutions has been responsible for much improvement in the standards of the teaching profession.

GRAMMAR REFERENCE SECTION

Зліченні іменники означають предмети, які можна полічити: a chair стілець, an engineer інженер, a question запитання

Зліченні іменники вживаються в однині (the singular) і множині (the plural).

[z] – після голосних і дзвінких приголосних, крім [z], [3], [d3]: a train поїзд – trains [trainz] a name ім’я – names [neimz] a sea море – seas [si:z]

[iz] – після звуків [s], [z], [j], [tj], [3], [d3]: a place місце – places [pleisiz] a rose троянда – roses ['rouzizl a wish бажання – wishes ['wijiz] a bench лава – benches ['bentjiz] a garage гараж – garages [g ^ra:3iz] a page сторінка – pages ['peid3iz]

a bus автобус – buses lunch сніданок – lunches

a class клас – classes a watch годинник – watches

a bush кущ – bushes a box ящик – boxes

a story оповідання – stories a fly муха – flies

a tomato помідор – tomatoes

Винятки: a piano рояль – pianos a photo фото – photos

a wife дружина – wives a l e af л и ст – leaves

a shelf полиця – shelves a wolf во вк – wolves

a calf теля – calves a half половина – halves

a knife ніж – knives a life життя – lives

a roof дах – roofs a c hief ватажок – chiefs

a kerchief хустка – kerchiefs a safe сейф – safes

a house [haus] – houses ['hauziz]

a man [msn] чоловік – men [men] a woman жінка – women ['wimin] a foot [fut] нога – feet [fi:t] a tooth [tu:0] зуб – teeth [ti:0] a goose [$u:s] гуска – geese [^i:s] a mouse [maus] миша – mice [mais] а child [tjaild] дитина – children

So much snow had fallen that it killed half the sheep and even many of the deer.

Деякі іменники латинського і грецького походження зберігають форми множини, які вони мали в цих мовах: a phenomenon явище – phenomena a crisis криза – crises a radius радіус – radii

a daughter-in-law невістка – daughters-in-law a school-mate шкільний товариш – school-mates

Jack's friends

Kate's toy іграшка Kami

Uncle Tom's Cabin

Olga's brother

Alice's adventures

George's room

Karl Marx' (або Marx's) life життя Карла Маркса

the pupils – the pupils' meeting

Peter's note-book

my friend's mother

the hawk's nest гніздо яструба

last week's salary

two years’ absence дворічна відсутність

at a mile's distance

Kyiv's parks

England's foreign trade

the river's banks береги річки

в) назви планет: the sun – сонце, the moon – місяць, the earth – земля: the sun's rays – промені сонця, the moon's surface – поверхня місяця;

Присвійний відмінок трапляється також у стійких словосполученнях, наприклад: a stone's throw – незначна відстань, to one's heart's content – досхочу.

В англійській мові є два артиклі – неозначений (the indefinite article) і означений (the definite article).

Форма а вживається перед словами, що починаються з приголосного звука: a woman, a good engineer.

Форма an вживається перед словами, що починаються з голосного звука: an old woman, an engineer.

Означений артикль має одну графічну форму the (the woman, the good engineer).

Не sat up and took a wallet out of Він підвівся і дістав гаманець із the inside pocket of Ws coat.

Opening the wallet he pulled some Відкривши гаманець, він витяг notes out.

Неозначений артикль вживається перед зліченними іменниками в однині після звороту there is (there was, there will be), який вводить предмет, ще невідомий читачеві чи співрозмовникові.

There is а mар on the wall.

There was a sharp knock on the

There will be a school here.

There was water in the cellar.

Then there was silence.

There are maps on the wall.

Is there any water in the city?

Odessa is a city.

My friend is an engineer.

Не was a very good man.

He is the doctor who treated me.

This is the shop where we bought Це магазин, в якому ми купили the tape-recorder.

The report was made by Petrento Доповідь була зроблена Петренком, an engineer of our plant.

N.V. Gogol, the outstandanding M.В. Гоголь, видатний російський Russian writer, studied in Nizhyn.

What a beautiful day!

It was such a cold day that we had Був такий холодний день, що ми to put on our warm coats.

She is still quite a child.

It is rather a difficult problem.

Nearly an hour passed.

A minute passed.

We have dictations twice a month.

A hundred. A thousand.

A child must play.

A bear likes honey.

Неозначений артикль вживається в деяких сталих словосполученнях, наприклад: to go for a walk ходити на прогулянку; to have a look глянути; to be in a hurry поспішати; for a long time довго тощо.

There was a door opposite me.

І went in and locked the door.

Open the door, please; we are

She opened the door of the room

(of the room – обмежувальне означення).

She is the most beautiful girl here.

It is the coldest place in Asia.

England in the seventeenth century. Англія в XVII столітті.

Не did not answer the third question.

Не saw the mistake he had made.

Не was dressed in the dark suit Він був у темному костюмі, який he wore on Sundays.

Означений артикль вживається перед іменниками, що означають предмети, єдині в своєму роді, наприклад, the sun сонце, the moon місяць, the earth земля, the sky небо.

The wolf is a wild animal.

The pine is an evergreen tree.

Означений артикль вживається в деяких сталих словосполученнях, наприклад: to go to the theatre ходити в театр; to play the piano грати на роялі; the other day нещодавно, цими днями; to tell the truth правду кажучи та ін.

Артикль не вживається, якщо перед іменником стоїть присвійний, вказівний або питальний займенник, а також займенник some, any, no, each, every, наприклад: my brother мій брат; this country ця країна; What story? Яке оповідання?; some students кілька студентів; no mistake жодної помилки; each pupil кожний учень; every day щодня.

What are you doing here, girls?

Без артикля вживаються назви днів тижня, місяців і здебільшого пір року, але якщо є обмежувальне означення, перед ними стоїть означений артикль: on Monday у понеділок; in July в липні; in autumn восени, але in the autumn of 1918 восени 1918 року.

Great war.

New strike at motor factory.

Helicopter saves man.

Fire destroys plane.

Артикль відсутній у багатьох сталих словосполученнях: at night вночі, by train поїздом, by mistake помилково, to take place відбуватися, мати місце, to go to bed лягти спати, from time to time час від часу.
